In this lush ecosystem of streams, rain forests, and bogs, lucky bird-watchers might spot the nene, Hawaii’s state bird and a descendant of Canada geese that came to the islands roughly half a million years ago. Before restoration efforts helped the nene’s numbers bounce back, there were only thirty left. Today there are estimated to be nearly 3,000 in the wild.
